UK taxes ‘force Clickair to raise Heathrow fares’
23.06.09
Budget airline Clickair is struggling on its UK routes as a result of passenger taxes. CEO Alex Cruz said Air Passenger Duty (APD) had placed a ‘huge burden’ on it, forcing it to raise its Heathrow fares above the system-wide average.
Mr Cruz, who was speaking at a press conference announcing the merger of Clickair and Spanish budget airline Vueling said: ‘If we had lower taxes we would be doing much better. We struggle when we advertise Heathrow fares of €45.
The merger is to be completed next month and will open up the UK market to Vueling, which operates mainly leisure destination in mainland Europe.
