Labour to drop Heathrow expansion support?
23.03.11
Anti-expansion campaigners are claiming a significant victory after the Labour Party announced that it is reviewing its policy on the expansion of Heathrow Airport. The party had previously given permission for the building a third runway at the airport, which was blocked by the coalition Government, who ruled out the building of a third runway in the current parliament.
The business community insists that Heathrow must expand for it to remain competitive with other hub airports. It slipped from second busiest airport in the world in 2009 to forth busiest in 2010, with the number of destinations it serves continuing to shrink whist European rivals grow.
Anti-expansion campaigners say Labour's policy review - which they suggest will see it reverse its support for a bigger Heathrow - indicates that political support for airport expansion is now fading.
