Union urges ground staff not to help BA break strike

British Airways ground staff have been asked by their union not to volunteer as emergency cabin crew, if a strike by the airline’s flight attendants goes ahead. The GMB union, which represents 7,000 check-in workers and baggage handlers, has e-mailed members asking them to shun the request from BA Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh for volunteers to be trained as stand-in cabin crew.
Mick Rix, the union’s National Executive Officer, said the letter was sent in conjunction with the Unite trade union, which represents over 90 percent of the airline’s 13,000 cabin crew. Unite is seeking a strike mandate in a ballot that launches on Monday in a dispute over cuts to staffing levels on BA’s long-haul planes, Mr Rix said.
