The recent fire at Heathrow Airport destroying an entire room full of its equipment and supplies belonging to Canada's alpine ski team. However, the team still plans to train on snow in New Zealand this month.
It estimates that $150,000 worth of skis, electronic timing equipment, computers and communications equipment were destroyed in the blaze which broke out in a warehouse near Heathrow on July 9. Insurance is expected to cover most of the damage but that process will take months, and could have caused the team to cancel the training camp.
Alpine Canada president Gary Allan said in a news release: ‘Everything we had for the camp has been lost. At this point we are starting from scratch and working our way toward what is needed to make this training camp happen. The cooperation that we have received from our many suppliers and partners has helped a lot but there's a long way to go.'
