BA cabin crew ballot dates announced
19.01.10
The Unite union has announced that it will open a strike ballot for its BA cabin crew members on January 25. The move comes after a week of talks with the airline held via the TUC failed to resolve the dispute over staff levels and working conditions, potentially leading to Easter travel chaos.
The vote is expected to take about a month and, if the almost 13,000 British Airways cabin crew affiliated to Unite agree to strike, as over 90 percent did in the last strike vote, a walkout could begin from the early March, Unite said in a statement. A spokeswoman for the union said Unite had gone as far as it could in the talks to meet the airline’s demands but the ball was now in BA’s court.
Strike action planned for Christmas was blocked after a court granted an injunction, declaring it illegal. Strike action over the busy Easter period is now a possibility, although the union might want to avoid this after the Judge who blocked the previous strike specifically warned against action timed to cause maximum passenger disruption. BA said it was ‘saddened but not surprised’ that the union had called another ballot.
