Watchdog warns on body scanners privacy risk
18.01.10
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), the UK equality watchdog, has written to the home secretary expressing concerns about plans to use full body scanners at airports. EHRC said the devices risked breaching an individual's right to privacy under the Human Rights Act.
The new scanned are being introduced in response to the attempt to blow up an American plane near Detroit on Christmas day. The prime minister said protecting people's life and liberty is paramount and pledged to introduce full body scanners at British airports. They are due to be in operation at Heathrow Airport by the end of this month.
