London Assembly vows to fight ‘back door’ Heathrow expansion
17.06.10
The London Assembly has called for a ban on any more flights from London’s airports and vowed to stop any plans by BAA to try to increase flights ‘by the back door’ following the Government’s decision to reject a third runway at Heathrow.
Assembly member Murad Qureshi said: ‘Axing the planned third runway has come as a tremendous relief to hundreds of thousands of Londoners whose quality of life would have been damaged. But that relief should not be undermined by a ‘back door’ attempt to increase flights using existing runways at Heathrow or Stansted, which could see another 60,000 flights a year over London.’
The Assembly is calling on the Secretary of State for Transport to tell BAA ‘no further,’ that Londoners ‘cannot be expected to tolerate any more flights in our already crowded skies.’ Members voted unanimously to fight any increase in flights including night-time or any further airport expansions.
The news comes at the same time that the Government has announced a new taskforce will be established to improve passenger experience at London airports without building extra runways. This has raised fears that airports might be allowed to increase flights - introducing mixed mode at Heathrow, for example.
