Virgin and easyJet seek to profit from BA strike
15.12.09
Virgin Atlantic will deploy bigger planes on US routes over the Christmas period as a strike vote at its biggest rival prompts a ‘furious’ scramble for tickets. BA's budget rival easyJet is also advertising that it has 160,000 seat available during the strike period on routes on which they compete directly.
Virgin will add 1,600 seats by switching to larger planes (Airbus SAS A340-600 jetliners instead of A340-300s) for services to New York, Washington and Boston plus Delhi in India after news of a 12-day walkout at BA prompted a 25 percent jump in booking calls, spokesman Paul Charles said in an interview.
easyJet has announced that it has 160,000 seats still available during the strike on routes where it competes directly with BA. A spokesman said that it may also schedule extra flights, following a surge in website hits.
