Conservatives and Liberals: Hutton's comments show Heathrow whitewash
15.07.08
The Conservative and Liberal Democrats say that comments by the Labour Government's Business Secretary John Hutton that Heathrow could get a third runway confirm that the Government has made up its mind on the airport's expansion before going through all of the 70,000 responses to their consultation.
Conservative Shadow Transport Secretary, Theresa Villiers, said: ‘Last week Ruth Kelly begged for more time to go through the 70,000 responses to her consultation document on Heathrow expansion. She claimed 'rigorous' work was going on to analyse all the responses.'
‘John Hutton's comments yesterday have made it clear that the only rigorous work going on in the Government is preparation for the whitewash report on their sham consultation.’
Liberal Democrat Shadow Transport Secretary, Norman Baker said: ‘John Hutton has let slip what we knew all along: the consultation on a third runway at Heathrow is a sham. The Government decided a long time ago that it wanted a third runway and is behaving more and more like a subsidiary of BAA. This makes a mockery of the Government’s carbon reduction targets.’
