BA directors face shareholders on T5 and surcharges

Shareholders will have the chance to question British Airways directors about the Heathrow Terminal 5 (T5) fiasco and its fuel charge problems at the airline's annual meeting in London today. The event is the first time shareholders have had a chance to air their views about the T5 debacle.
The £4.3 billion Heathrow facility - used exclusively by BA - suffered a disastrous opening on March 27, with over 500 flights cancelled, more than 20,000 bags going astray and huge queues. Just about everything that could go wrong did so, with BA CEO Mr Walsh accepting the blame.
In April, BA announced that operations director Gareth Kirkwood and customer services director David Noyes were leaving the company and linked their departure specifically to the T5 situation. Last week, heads of Heathrow operator BAA told MPs that T5 was running well now, but members of the Unite union said that its members had warned BA and BAA about the problems before the terminal opened, but their warnings had been ignored.
