Heathrow to open ‘terminal 6’ for Olympics
14.10.11
For one day only Heathrow Airport will open a special temporary terminal for London 2012 Olympic athletes as a way of easing the strain on the hub, the Telegraph reports. The new 'terminal six', nicknamed the Games Terminal, will be constructed in a cargo area of Heathrow close to Terminal 4 and will have eight security lanes.
The terminal will operate for one day only, on August 13, 2012, the day after the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. This is expected to be the be the busiest day of the Games for Heathrow as the teams will fly in to the UK over a period of weeks, but will all want to leave on the same day. Officials expect seven percent more passengers than it has ever catered for on that calendar day come through its doors on that day - including 137,000 departing passengers.
Athlete check-in and bag drops of more than 60,000 bags – including large sports equipment like canoes, pole vaults, bikes and javelins – will be conducted at the Olympic athletes' village to smooth the process. They will be bussed to the Games terminal, go through security and then be transferred airside to the various terminals for their departures.
