BMI confirm Lufthansa ‘considering its options’
12.09.11
BMI has issued a statement in response to reports that its parent, Lufthansa, has put it up for sale. According to reports Lufthansa has appointed Morgan Stanley to dispose of the loss-making airline, but BMI has said various options are being considered. The airline said: ‘The Lufthansa and BMI management team are exploring and assessing options, no decision has been made.'
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have both expressed interest in BMI, with Virgin thought to prefer a merger and BA only interested in the airline's slots at Heathrow. Middle Eastern airlines are also said to be interested, to gain a larger footprint at Heathrow. However, Emirates has ruled itself out of bidding and Etihad has declined to comment.
Lufthansa opened BMI’s books two years ago in an attempt to generate interest in the airline, but decided to keep it after little was shown.
