Passengers at BAA's UK airports up 4.3% in June
11.07.05
BAA’s seven UK airports saw a total of 13.4 million passengers pass through their revolving doors in June, with an average increase in passenger numbers of 4.3% (all figures compared to June 2004). But the average increase masks big differences between the seven, with Southampton up 31.7% and Heathrow up 1.1%. That said, but 1.1% at Heathrow (66,000) is more than 31.7% at Southampton (57,000)!
Passenger numbers at Heathrow in June were just over 6m, up 1.1% on a year earlier, and easily BAA's biggest airport. Growth in long haul passengers at Heathrow offset a fall in passengers on short haul services 'caused by the growing popularity of low cost services' (according to BAA - with these low cost passengers flying from airports other than Heathrow). In the 12 months to June passenger numbers were 2.7% up at 67.8m.
Elsewhere, Stansted had passengers up 9.2% to 2.0m, at Gatwick they were up 4.6% to 3.2m and Southampton posted the highest increase in the group adding 31.7% (181000). Of BAA’s three Scottish airports, Edinburgh led the pack with passengers up 9.6% (790000), followed by Aberdeen up 9.3% (257000) then Glasgow up 4.3% (890000). The combined increase in passenger numbers over a year earlier at BAA’s Scottish airports was 7.1%.
Commenting on the numbers, BAA said that 'other long haul markets' recorded the highest growth, 11.1%, primarily as a result of increases in passengers on new India routes and routes to and from China. European scheduled passenger numbers were up by 5.7% and North Atlantic markets up by 0.7%. Passengers to and from Ireland were up by 10.5% on the back of new routes, and UK Domestic traffic rose 4.0%. The European charter flights market fell again, by 5.9% in June, as holidaymakers switch to (scheduled) budget flights.
