Council calls for Heathrow Airtrack stop in Putney

BAA has come under pressure to ensure its planned new Airtrack rail service stops at Putney, the Wandsworth Guardian reports. Despite the proposed train link between Heathrow and Waterloo being years away from becoming a reality, Wandsworth Council is urging the airport to include a stop at Putney.
Under the current plan the service would stop at Heathrow, Staines, Feltham, Richmond, Clapham Junction and Waterloo. Councillors are reported to be concerned that this stopping pattern misses out a stretch of south west London and would force thousands of passengers to travel into Clapham Junction and Richmond to catch the new link.
Transport spokesman, Councillor Ravi Govindia, said: ‘Improving public transport connections around Heathrow is vital if it is to become the ‘better not bigger’ airport we’ve been promised. Airtrack is one way in which BAA can start to address this. If there’s going to be a service from Waterloo, then it must include a stop at Putney.’
BAA is expected to consider Airtrack with its airline partners after a £700m funding pot, set aside for a third runway at Heathrow, became available when the third runway expansion scheme was blocked by the new Government. A spokesman for BAA told the newspaper: ‘We continue to develop our plans for Airtrack and we will listen carefully to the opinions of Wandsworth Council and local people.’
