MP presses for Reading – Heathrow rail link
09.08.11
A campaign to create a direct rail link between Reading and Heathrow Airport is gathering pace after Reading East MP Rob Wilson held a meeting with transport secretary Philip Hammond, BAA and representatives from the rail industry. Network Rail and First Great Western (FGW) support the plans and are working with Mr Wilson and others to promote the scheme, getreading reports.
Mr Wilson said: ‘I believe it is a vital project for Reading so that we continue to be, long into the future, a pivotal place for international investment, but also become an economic gateway to prosperity in the West of England and Wales.’
Heathrow passengers from Reading currently have to use the RailAir coach service or catch a train to Paddington and then head back on the Heathrow Express service. The western link would require four or five miles of new railway from Langley, near Slough, into Terminal Five where there are two empty rail platforms.
Mr Wilson told getreading: ‘It went extremely well. We had all the people there who could get the project going. We have a plan of action which we are now endeavouring to progress and we are meeting again in September. The secretary of state turned up for the meeting and gave a lot of helpful input. He is fully behind what we are doing.’ However, he warned that the link could take five years.
