Three more convicted over Heathrow liquid bomb plot

Three British Muslims who wanted to be suicide bombers in an al Qaeda plot intended to rival 9/11 face life sentences after being convicted in connection with the liquid bomb plot yesterday. Arafat Waheed Khan, 28, of Walthamstow, Ibrahim Savant, 29, of Stoke Newington and Waheed Zaman, 25, of Walthamstow were part of a terror cell which planned to kill thousands of transatlantic passengers on flights from Heathrow.
The plot was smashed in August 2006 after the largest police surveillance operation in UK history, and led to the ban on liquids being taken airside that still affects passengers around the world. The three ringleaders of the plot are already serving life sentences for conspiring to blow up seven aircraft over the Atlantic with liquid bombs disguised as soft drinks.
Khan, Savant and Zaman were convicted yesterday of conspiracy to murder after a trial lasting two months at Woolwich crown court. They had already admitted causing a public nuisance by making martyrdom videos, which also carries a major prison sentence. They will be sentenced on Monday, and can expect life sentences with long minimum terms.
