BAA reports passengers up 5%

BAA handled a total of 12.3 million passengers at its seven UK airports in May, a rise of 5% on the same month last year. No-frills airlines adding to their number of destinations helped airports including Stansted, Gatwick and Heathrow enjoy continued increases in passenger numbers.
During May 2005 all seven of BAA's UK airports recorded gains in passenger numbers. Flybe's expansion of routes helped Southampton record the largest gain, up 30.4%, with Stansted recording an increase of 10.7%. Gatwick recorded a more modest gain up 4.9%, and Heathrow bounced back from a decline in April passengers to record a 2% rise with 5.6 million passengers last month.
A new daily scheduled service to the US and rugby fans travelling for the Heiniken Cup final helped deliver a 12.3% increase at Edinburgh. Aberdeen was 10.9% ahead of last year and Glasgow was up by 2.6%.
Looking at trends across the seven aiprorts, new low cost services from Gatwick and extra seat capacity from Glasgow stimulated a 10.6% growth on Irish routes. European scheduled traffic was up 7.4%, whilst long haul routes were up 8.1% and North Atlantic traffic increased by 2.3%. European charter traffic was down 8.6%, and domestic traffic was up 5.7% Air transport movements were 4.3% higher and cargo tonnage was down by 1.0%.
