Hoon quits as Transport Secretary
07.06.09
Geoff Hoon became the latest minister to quit the Cabinet yesterday, in order to pursue a ‘wider role’ in European and international affairs, he said. His comment in a letter of resignation to Gordon Brown will fuel speculation that he has been lined up to take over as the UK's European Commissioner when the post comes up for reappointment later this year.
The Transport Secretary has been a member of the Government throughout Labour's 12 years in power. He made clear in his resignation letter that he informed the Prime Minister some time ago of his intention to leave the Government. He is replaced as Transport Secretary by former rail minister Lord Adonis.
Since taking over the Department for Transport in October last year, Mr Hoon has played a major part in forcing through the Government's plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport. His departure was welcomed by Greenpeace, whose executive director John Sauven said: ‘Geoff Hoon's resignation is an ideal opportunity for Labour to ditch its disastrous Heathrow policy and make a clean break from the past.'
