BA ‘to cut 4000 jobs’

British Airways is planning to slash 4,000 jobs - one in 10 of its workforce - the Mirror reports. The newspaper reports that BA yesterday told unions the cuts were vital because the recession had left it fighting for survival. The jobs cull will include cabin crew, ground staff, pilots and engineers, with at least 1000 of the current 8,500 administrative staff and 2,000 cabin crew facing the chop by September 30.
The newspaper reports that BA wrote to the Unite and GMB unions warning that it could go under if drastic measures are not taken, a message its Chief Executive, Willie Walsh, gave to staff in the airline's latest staff newspaper last week. The letter said: ‘These are the most difficult trading conditions BA has ever seen. We have to take steps to fight for our survival. We propose that 1000 colleagues from our administrative A-scale groups are at risk of dismissal or redundancy.’ BA says that by reducing its admin levels, productivity will increase.
The cuts will come across the UK, although mainly at Heathrow. The letter makes it clear that BA is willing to make compulsory redundancies if necessary - and will not tempt staff to leave with big pay-offs. It adds: ‘We will of course meet our statutory liabilities.’
