International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways and Iberia, has reported passenger traffic up 7.2 percent last year as a surge in growth at BA made up for almost static demand at Iberia. IAG also announced a strong rise in traffic in December, boosted by continued growth in first and business class passenger numbers.
Passenger traffic increased 10.6 percent at BA, while Iberia posted a gain of 0.1 percent, IAG said today. BA also accounted for almost 70 percent of IAG's total traffic, a measure of the number of passengers carried times the distance flown.
The group carried a total of 51.7 million passengers in 2011, up 2.1 percent compared with pro forma figures for 2010. BA increased capacity 9.8 percent during the 12 months, with Iberia adding only 1.2 percent more seats.
December passenger traffic was up 12.2 percent compared to 2010 (which was hit by severe weather that closed Heathrow), with its load factor up 0.6 percentage points at 77.6 percent. Its first and business-class travel - the most profitable part of its passenger business - rose 13.6 percent, while non-premium traffic was up 12 percent.
