BA and Unite talking again

British Airways and cabin crew union Unite are holding informal talks in a fresh attempt to averting a strike by the airline's 12,000 cabin crew, the union said yesterday. The two sides are ‘not miles apart’ in their search for a solution, with the removal of imposed cuts in flight attendant levels the key sticking point for Unite, a union official said.
BA made changes to working staffing levels in order to accept 1003 offers of voluntary redundancy and to allow 693 cabin crew members to switch to part time working. It says the changes will save it £80m over the next 18 months, with the move part of plans to cut costs by £130m this year in order to help move the airline back in to profit.
However, Steve Turner, the union’s national officer for aviation, said: ‘We believe we have alternatives on the table that can save a considerable amount,’ without specifying how much the union proposals would save.
