BAA said its new Heathrow Terminal 5 would be able to cope with increased demand over this Bank Holiday weekend. Around 685,000 passengers are expected to use the airport over the four days (BAA did not detail how many of these would pass through T5).
Passenger numbers will peak today with 187,000 people setting off from Heathrow, and a BAA spokeswoman insisted that Terminal 5 was operating well. On a busy weekend at the start of the summer season, Gatwick is expecting 374,000 passengers, Stansted 255,000 and Glasgow 90,000.
Popular destinations this year include New York, Dublin, Amsterdam and Rome, with those seeking guaranteed sun opting for Orlando, Faro, Tenerife and Alicante.
