Walsh urges BA staff to ‘pull together’ to beat strike

British Airways Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh has urged staff to 'pull together' during any strike action by cabin crew, telling them that 1000s of workers have offered to help beat any action. Talks aimed at resolving the long-running and bitter row over jobs and working conditions are continuing this week between BA managers and the Unite union, with cabin crew holding off naming strike dates while there continues to be chance of a deal.
Hopes have been raised that an agreement might be reached. However, Mr Walsh said that despite the continuing talks, the airline is gearing up to look after its customers in the event of a strike, which the union only needs to give seven days notice of after the vote backing the action announced last week.
Writing in the airline' staff newspaper, Mr Walsh said: 'Thousands of you have come forward to back BA in a range of ways, including volunteering to work alongside cabin crew who decide not to support the strike. I am confident that we'll all do our best for our customers and ensure we are able to fly as many aircraft as possible to keep disruption to a minimum.'
'If the strike goes ahead, we will need closer teamwork than ever before. We must do everything we can to protect our customer's travel plans and to retain their faith in BA as much as possible.'
The staff newspaper also details numerous roles staff will be asked to perform in the event of a strike, including driving people not taking industrial action to various locations at Heathrow and Gatwick.
