Anger at Guernsey Airport meeting
20.09.09
Residents expressed anger at a public meeting about proposals for Guernsey Airport this week. They raised concerns over the environmental impact of the planned extension of the western safety area.
Airport director Colin Le Ray said the £81m project to update the runway and safety areas was essential to comply with international aviation standards. Deputy David De Lisle said a full cost assessment had to be done before the plans went before the States.
About 70 people attended a meeting at the Forest School, called by the Public Services Department (PSD), which has responsibility for the airport. The main concerns raised were over increased noise if planes were to be flying lower over nearby houses and that larger aircraft were expected in the future.
The States will decide if the plans should go ahead at a meeting on 29 September.
