Gloucester Airport training exercise
31.08.08
Workers at Gloucestershire Airport are being encouraged to be obstructive and difficult this weekend, in aid of a good cause. The airport is helping Gloucestershire-based charity SARAID Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters - train for overseas deployments to disaster areas.
Staffed by volunteers and funded solely by public donations, SARAID is on call 365 days a year to provide trained Search and Rescue personnel, free of charge to any country in need of assistance.
SARAID Founder, Stefan Hopkins said: 'One of the difficulties we face when arriving in a country can be dealing with officialdom, paperwork and border controls. Particularly amidst a disaster, in a foreign country it can be difficult to co-ordinate the arrival of our personnel and specialist equipment.'
'As part of a weekend of training, were running an exercise to simulate our arrival phase. Initially, we need the airport staff to be as difficult as possible in allowing us into the country and we'll need to turn their reluctance to help around in order to set up a Reception centre for all the emergency agencies.'
Airport Head of Operations, Darren Lewington said: 'Obviously we re pleased to be able to assist SARAID with their training, but it will be a new experience in being awkward towards to our customers!'
