Passengers travelling from Scotland's airports have more than doubled over the past 15 years, benefiting from rapid growth in the number of direct international flights, according to a major study. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) report also found that fewer Scottish travellers are using London connections to access destinations in Europe and the United States.
The report shows that total passengers at the five largest airports in Scotland rose by 162 percent in the last 15 years as international scheduled routes increased from 10 to 45. Edinburgh Airport saw the biggest net growth over the period, from 2.5 to 8.6 million, while Glasgow saw passenger numbers grow from 4.3 to 8.8 million. The number of passengers using Prestwick grew by 2,421 percent from 95,000 to 2.4 million.
