£12m boost for security at BAA Scottish Airports

Security is to be stepped up at Scotland's three largest airports at a cost of £12 million. BAA Scotland has announced plans to recruit new security officers was under way and that it will install extra X-ray equipment at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports.
The investment is aimed at speeding up the screening process after the Government decision to tighten UK airport security last year in the wake of the liquid bomb plot. Stephen Baxter, managing director of BAA Scotland, said: 'It is clear that the heightened restrictions introduced last year are long term and that, having already absorbed additional costs over the past few months, we must also make increased provision for security in our future plans.'
'As a result of this investment by BAA, we will have more security staff in place and more X-ray machines in operation this year than ever before. Over a two-year period, we will invest £12 million on new equipment and facilities, and create 234 new security posts. This investment reflects BAA Scotland's aim to reduce security waiting times and improve the flow of passengers.'
At Glasgow Airport, 77 new security staff will be recruited this year and two new X-ray machines will be installed in the international search area. At Aberdeen, a further 20 personnel will be employed and one new screening machine will be installed and at Edinburgh an extra 51 staff and two new X-ray machines will be installed.
