Australia drops charges against Indian doctor over bomb plot

An Indian doctor held in Australia over last month's failed car bombings in London and at Glasgow Airport had the charge of supporting terrorism against him dropped yesterday. Mohammed Haneef, who was arrested at Brisbane airport on July 2 while waiting with a one-way ticket for a flight to India, was released from custody into residential detention.
Police in Australia charged Mr Haneef with recklessly supporting terrorism by providing a relative in Britain - his second cousin Sabeel Ahmed - with his mobile phone SIM card. They alleged that the 27-year-old doctor had supplied a SIM that had been found in a blazing Jeep at Glasgow Airport. However, they were later forced to retracted the allegation, after it became clear that the SIM card was found in a house in Liverpool.
Australia's Director of Public Prosecutions, Damian Bugg, admitted mistakes had been made by his department and that the case was dropped because there was no chance of a successful prosecution.
A spokesman for Mr. Haneef said that he wants to leave the country as soon as he receives visa clearance from immigration authorities. The Australian authorities have indicated that they will allow him to leave the country.
