32 hour delay for Flyglobespan Glasgow Airport flight
26.05.09
Almost 200 passengers were stranded in Spain after a Flyglobespan flight to Glasgow Airport was delayed for 32 hours when two tyres on their plane were damaged in a freak incident, the Evening Times reports.
The flight was due to leave Alicante on Monday at 11:00, but passengers were told they would not be taking off until later that afternoon. However, at around 22:00 all 182 travellers were taken to local hotels overnight. When they returned to Alicante airport the next day the plane was still not repaired and they had to wait for a replacement aircraft. They finally arrived at Glasgow Airport at 21:00 on Tuesday - 32 hours late.
A Flyglobespan spokesman told the newspaper that the delay had been caused by a highly unusual technical problem which was outside the expertise of engineers at Alicante. Replacement tyres had been flown in from Edinburgh but Alicante airport did not have a hydraulic lift able to support the plane while they were changed. A lift and engineer were then jetted in from Glasgow and a back up plane was also sent to the Spanish resort.
The spokesman insisted a representative of Flightcare, which deals with customers, was available at the airport for information and advice. He also said passengers were provided with breakfast and meal vouchers during the day. However, passengers are reported to be upset with the way they were treated by Flyglobespan. One claimed holidaymakers were left waiting for five hours at the airport on Monday before being offered anything to eat or drink - and even then they got only a roll and jam and one bottle of water each.
