Glasgow Airport and businesses call for APD to be axed
26.11.11
Glasgow Airport and the city's business leaders have slammed Westminster’s punishing high taxes, including air passenger duty, the Evening Times reports. The airport and businesses including airline Jet2 and Scotia Travel joined forces to call for the scrapping of taxes on air travel in a letter to Business Secretary Vince Cable MP.
They urged Mr Cable to back their calls for no further increases in APD, which is expected to be increased at twice the rate of inflation - by around 10% - in the Chancellor’s autumn statement on November 29. The rises will affect all flights after April 1 next year –but anyone buying tickets before April for later in the year will also be hit.
Business leaders say the anticipated tax rise will have ‘a devastating consequences on jobs and businesses’. Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: ‘The UK currently has the highest rate of aviation tax in Europe and there is no indication that this will be capped or lowered to help improve our competitive position. There is no question that the ability of Scots to travel for business or leisure will suffer unless there is a fundamental review of APD.’
