Glasgow Airport hero opens John Smeaton college
25.04.08
John Smeaton was recognised for acting bravely in the face of danger after he helped tackle terror suspects who crashed a burning Jeep into the terminal building at Glasgow Airport last year. Since then he has been to the US, to visit the Prime Minister and received a medal from the Queen. And earlier this week he opened a community college bearing his name in Leeds, of all places.
John Smeaton, or 'Smeato' as he is affectionately known, is a somewhat reluctant hero who has had to get used to the limelight - and this week, the ex-baggage handler (now head of security at an airport car park) was honoured once again by opening a flagship school which bears his name.
The college is actually named after another John Smeaton - an 18th century Leeds-born engineer who built everything from bridges to lighthouses. And his modern-day namesake was delighted to open the new college and to attempt to inspire its students.
