Glasgow Airport launch illegal weapons campaign
24.06.09
Passengers flying out of Glasgow Airport have been warned not to bring back illegal weapons from their summer breaks, the Evening Times reports. Officers from Strathclyde Police's Violence Reduction Unit joined the UK Border Agency and airports staff to launch a crackdown on passengers bringing dangerous items back into the country.
Jim Gilfeather from the UK Border Agency told the newspaper that a host of weapons are regularly seized by officers at the airport. He said: 'We see a variety of items coming into the country, from knuckle dusters, batons and flick knives to martial arts weapons and even CS gas spray. These things can seem attractive and it might seem like a good idea but it can quickly backfire at six in the morning when you fly back into Glasgow.’
Mr Gilfeather added that ignorance of what can and cannot be brought back will not be a defence. He said: ‘If you're caught and charged you can face anything from a fine to four years in prison. One passenger was recently fined £4000 for trying to bring weapons in to Scotland.'
