Glasgow Airport get new hi-tech fire engine
24.01.12
Glasgow became the first airport in Scotland to take delivery of a £600,000 Rosenbauer CA5 Panther - a hi-tech fire engine. It is the first of three Panthers to take to the runway. The second will arrive in June, with the third early next year.
The 34-tonne Panther is known as a Major Foam Tender. It is bright yellow instead of the traditional red fire engine. The biggest difference in the Panthers – which will be replacing three vehicles in the Cobra fleet – is that firefighters no longer need to manually work the water cannon from the roof. Instead the Panther has buttons and joysticks control almost everything.
The appliance can carry 13,000 litres of water and 16,000 litres of foam and, despite all that weight, can accelerate from zero to 50mph in 32 seconds. The high pressure hose reel on the Panther, which can shoot water almost 80 yards; the Cobras can reach just over 50 yards.
The 67 firefighters who cover the runway and surrounding are being given extensive training to use the new engine's digital controls.
