Doctor arrested at Glasgow Airport over explosives
22.04.08
A doctor was arrested in a weekend terror swoop at Glasgow Airport, the Daily Record reports. It sounds very much like this was the suspect package alert reported on the same day.
The 28-year-old doctor was detained after security staff detected what they believed were traces of explosives on his hand luggage. The doctor who works at Wishaw General Hospital, Lanarkshire, was held overnight on Saturday at Partick police station.
An 'airport insider' told the newspaper: ‘There were traces of explosive found on the guy's personal belongings.’ A police spokeswoman said: ‘We can confirm that as a result of routine scanning of hand baggage by BAA staff at Glasgow airport, an item was identified requiring further examination. In the interests of public safety, the owner of the item - a 28-year-old man - was subsequently identified and detained to allow further investigation to take place.’
Last night, a police spokesman told the Record that it had been a false alarm. He added: ‘The item has now been fully examined and it has been found to be completely in order. The man has been released and the matter is being treated by police as a false alarm.’
A Glasgow Airport spokesman said: ‘There was no disruption caused to the normal running of the airport.’
