Hundreds back Glasgow Airport medals campaign
22.02.08
Hundreds have backed a campaign to get three of four men who helped police during last June's terror attack on Glasgow Airport medals. Only airport baggage handler John Smeaton is to receive official recognition by being awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal. However fellow hero Michael Kerr's wife Annette has spearheaded an initiative to have the bravery of the other men recognised and set up a website – www.medals4all.com – which has received hundreds of hits from supporters.
A letter from an official who advises Prime Minister Gordon Brown on gallantry awards said the three men had not been brave enough for an award. The letter received by Mrs Kerr stated: ‘Although your husband's action was praiseworthy it did not reach the standard required for a gallantry award.’
Mrs Kerr said: ‘The support we have received so far has been marvellous. I've just received confirmation that our petition now appears on the No.10 website and would urge everyone to sign it. We will also be in Glasgow city centre on Saturday, March 1, collecting signatures.’
The petition can be found at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/medals4all/ or from a link on www.medals4all.com.
