CAA backs sale of Scottish airport – but doesn’t care which one
19.01.09
Aviation industry regulator the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has backed a decision by the competition watchdog to force BAA to sell one of its Scottish airports, but added that it not have a preference for which one is sold.
Last month the Competition Commission recommended that operators BAA sell off Edinburgh Airport to open up the market for the benefit of passengers. But the CAA said that while it supported the commission's proposals, it did not believe there was a sufficient case to specify whether it should be Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport that is sold.
Dr Harry Bush, group director of the CAA's economic regulation group, said: ‘The CAA strongly supports the Competition Commission's structural reforms, involving the break-up of BAA to improve competition in the UK airport market. This break up must be linked with reform of regulation.’
