Glasgow Airport jet fire man to be detained ‘indefinitely’
18.06.09
A man who set fire to a plane at Glasgow Airport has been ordered to be detained without limit of time at the State Hospital. Albanian national Safet Bukoshi, 36, admitted causing £103,000 of damage to a British Midlands aircraft in January 2005. The High Court in Glasgow heard from a consultant psychiatrist that he suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.
The court heard how he used a plank of wood to climb over the perimeter fence at Glasgow Airport before setting fire to the plane. Fire crews managed to extinguish the blaze before it turned into a ‘catastrophe’. Bizarrely, in order to carry out the arson attack, he walked passed a hut in which security staff were sitting twice. Judge Lady Dorrian ordered that Mr Bukoshi to be detained after being told he was a danger to the public when at liberty.
