bmibaby switches from Prestwick back to Glasgow Airport
17.11.05
In a major coup for Glasgow International Airport, low-cost airline bmibaby today axed its twice-daily flights to Cardiff from Prestwick and said it would start the same service from Glasgow. The move comes two and a half years after bmibaby stopping flying the route from Glasgow, claiming the city's main airport was too expensive.
Jubilant bosses at Glasgow airport, owned by BAA Scotland, see the switch as a huge boost. They reported a 1% drop in passenger numbers in October, mostly because of a downturn in domestic traffic, and have been working hard to win back domestic routes.
The loss of bmibaby leaves Prestwick heavily reliant on Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair, which has thrived at the cheaper Ayrshire airport. Two years ago Glasgow won another airline - flyglobespan - away from Prestwick. The carrier has now grown into one of Scotland's most important, and Ryanair and easyJet's biggest rivals.
bmibaby already flies from Glasgow to East Midlands Airport. Its big sister, bmi, serves Copenhagen, Heathrow, Manchester and Leeds Bradford from Glasgow.
