Report on Glasgow Airport future planned
15.11.09
An urgent study in to the economic impact of Glasgow Airport is to be carried out amid fears for its future, the Herald reports. It says that Glasgow and Renfrewshire Councils are in talks with the airport’s owner, BAA, about compiling a detailed assessment of the risks to the region over the next 30 years if the airport’s status were to decline. As well as looking at the failure to develop the airport to its full potential, the study will also highlight the benefits to the economy should there be growth and investment at the hub.
Existing figures show Glasgow Airport contributes £700 million annually to the wider Scottish economy. It employs 5,000 people directly and 10,000 indirectly. These figures, however, were compiled in 2002 and are in need of updating.
The report will come at a crucial time for Glasgow Airport, which faces being sold off under a Competition Commission ruling. It is also closing its secondary terminal - T2 - this week in order to save money over the winter, as passenger numbers plummet.
