Concerns over roadworks near Glasgow Airport

A worried commuter has said it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident on the flyover at Glasgow Airport, the Paisley Daily Express reports. Eryk Pietryga from Johnstone, who drives on the M8 everyday to get to work, says drivers who are using the narrowed lanes on the flyover are in danger of causing an accident.
The lanes were narrowed last November as part of roadworks on the stretch of motorway but no work seems to have been carried out since. Mr Pietryga told the newspaper: ‘I have grave concerns about the safety of the narrow lanes on the flyover. With the lane width what it is at the moment, there are only inches to spare on either side and it is only a matter of time before there is a major accident.'
‘Bringing the speed limit down from 50 mph to 40 mph hasn't made any difference, people still speed and it only takes one other driver to lose control for there to be an accident.’
Amey the company contracted to carry out work to strengthen the White Cart Viaduct say work is due to start in January 2009. Colin Mackenzie, unit manager for Amey in South West Scotland, told the newspaper: ‘The White Cart Viaduct has in recent years been subject to an ongoing refurbishment and upgrading programme.'
‘Temporary traffic management measures designed to reduce the load on the structure until the upgrading programme are in place and will remain on the bridge until the strengthening works commence and are completed. This is purely a precautionary measure.'
‘The reduction in lane widths has been accompanied by a reduction in the speed limit to 40mph and these measures comply with current guidelines.‘
