Man avoids jail over Glasgow Airport gun ‘joke’
12.05.09
A man who claimed to have two guns after staff tried to remove him from a bar at Glasgow Airport has narrowly avoided a prison sentence. A sheriff told him that in the current climate of fear about terrorism he was fortunate not to have been jailed.
Abdul Chaudry, 31, from Glasgow, admitted conducting himself in a disorderly manner in December last year. Paisley Sheriff Court heard that he had consumed too much alcohol on the day in question and that his actions were part of a drunken prank. When he was asked by staff to leave the Sand Piper Bar he began to shout and swear, refused to comply and stated that he had two guns on his person.
At an earlier hearing he admitted conducting himself in a disorderly manner and committing a breach of the peace. His defence agent said he sincerely regretted his actions. Sheriff Mairi Mactaggart said his comments, given the location and the current world-wide concerns about terrorism, were ‘extremely foolish’. Sentencing him to 140 hours community service' she added that he was fortunate not to have been prosecuted at a higher level.
