Irish taxes mean it costs more to fly to Edinburgh than Glasgow
11.07.09
Airport and tourism bosses have hit out at Irish air taxes, which mean Irish travellers flying to Edinburgh now pay more than their Glasgow-bound counterparts, the Evening News reports. Industry experts believe the air travel tax, introduced by the Irish Government at the start of the year, could influence whether visitors choose to fly to Edinburgh , or instead opt for a cheaper flight to Glasgow.
The new tax is based on whether a destination is within 300km of Dublin, so passengers heading for Edinburgh, which is further, must pay a €10 tax, yet those bound for Glasgow, which is within the distance, only €2.
Gordon Dewar, managing director of Edinburgh Airport, told the newspaper: ‘With the economic downturn, we are all working hard to sustain the success of our city's tourism industry and to grow international visitor numbers. However, the extra tax levied on those flying from Ireland to Edinburgh risks undermining the city's competitive position relative to other parts of the UK.'
‘Edinburgh Airport gets large numbers of visitors from Ireland and we wish to continue our growth figures. We have raised these concerns with the Scottish Government and Edinburgh City Council and I hope, that by working together, we can convince the Irish Government to change their position.’
