Fake goods warning for Glasgow Airport passengers
09.10.10
Passengers were urged to resist the lure of counterfeit goods on one of the the busiest days of the year Glasgow Airports. Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency staff were at the airport on yesterday, reminding passengers of the law surrounding fake goods. More than 30,000 passengers used the airport yesterday, as the schools broke up for half term. Between Friday and Monday, Glasgow Airport is expected to deal with 105,000 passengers.
The SCDEA staff were backed up by the UK Border Agency in the first of a series of events that will tour all of Scotland's airports. Detective Chief Inspector Ronnie Megaughin of the SCDEA warned the trade in fake goods was ‘not a victimless crime’. He said: ‘Those who are involved in this illegal activity are very often also responsible for peddling drugs in our communities, forcing people into the sex trade and trading in firearms.’
Officers will be displaying a range of commonly counterfeited goods such as clothing, DVDs, alcohol, tobacco and perfume. Murdo MacMillan, assistant director for the UK Border Agency in Scotland, warned: ‘The goods are often dangerous and the proceeds can be used to fuel serious organised crime.’
