Adonis and Brown blast SNP over Glasgow Airport Rail Link axe
07.11.09
UK Transport Secretary Lord Adonis yesterday slammed the SNP decision to scrap the Glasgow Airport Rail Link, saying that it was a ‘serious mistake’ that would badly damage the city's chances of boosting business whilst Gordon Brown called it 'wrong and short sighted.'
Lord Adonis said: ‘Future expansion of Glasgow airport was closely related to the rail link. It was going to make it possible for far more people to travel by public transport, promote faster and more reliable journeys and reduce carbon emissions greatly. Fewer than 10 percent of passengers to and from the airport use public transport - but with the link that was expected to hit 20 percent.'
‘The cancellation is a big setback for the airport. And it will make Glasgow a less attractive business and tourism destination because the quality of links are not as good as they would have been. It is a serious mistake. More surprisingly, it was done at short notice and with no consulation with BAA at all - that's no way to run a transport policy.’
Gordon Brown also slammed the decision, describing it as ‘wrong and short-sighted’. The Labour leader's comments came on the campaign trail in the Glasgow North East by-election.
