Big backing for campaign to save BA Glasgow Airport base
04.11.08
So many people tried to sign the online petition to call for the British Airways' cabin crew base at Glasgow Airport to be saved that it crashed within hours of going live, the Evening News reports. The website (www.saveBAscotland.co.uk), which has now been restored, has already been signed by around 1300 people, including from places as far away as Australia, America, Austria, France and Malta.
Almost 140 jobs are at stake, although staff have been offered the option of commuting to their new base at Heathrow. Staff, who cannot be named because they fear for their jobs, said they were ‘overwhelmed’ by the immediate response after the Evening Times reported the petition was being set up. They said the reason for the crash was because its inbox had not been big enough to cope with the number of people wishing to express their support!
Unite officials, the union which represents the staff, claim the decision to close the base shows BA has no interest in Scotland and is ‘gradually pulling out of Scotland’. This is denied by the airline.
