Glasgow Airport terror suspects 'not from UK'
02.07.07
A number of press reports today claim that at least one doctor - and possibly two is among five people arrested as part of the police investigation into the terror attack at Glasgow Airport and two failed car bombs in central London. Gordon Brown linked the attacks to 'people who are associated with al-Qaeda' in a statement yesterday.
In addition to the two men arrested at Glasgow Airport on Saturday, the other arrests included a 26-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman seized on the M6 in Cheshire on Saturday, and a 26-year-old man in Liverpool. All three have been taken to Paddington Green police station in London for questioning.
The BBC has identified one of the suspects in custody as Lebanese national doctor Mohammed Asha, who it said lived and worked in England. It adds that the other four people in custody were nationals of various Middle Eastern countries, as opposed to British-born Muslims.
The Sun newspaper identifies one of those detained as an Iranian doctor who worked at North Staffordshire Hospital in central England. Police are yet to release any names publicly and nobody has been charged. A police source confirmed a manhunt was under way for an unspecified number of suspects.
Police say the discovery of two car bombs in central London and the attack on Glasgow Airport are linked. Officers were last night continuing a forensic examination of a house in Renfrewshire village of Houston, an affluent suburb about 10 minutes from Glasgow Airport. Neighbours said two Asian men moved into the rented property a few weeks ago. One of them was thought to be a doctor.
Over the weekend, forensic examinations were carried out at a house near Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, where those arrested on the M6 were believed to live. Neighbours said the property was rented by a doctor - named locally as Mohammed Asha - who is thought to be married with one young child. Elsewhere, Merseyside Police have been searching two addresses in the Liverpool area.
There are unconfirmed reports that police were continuing to hunt at least one additional "key" suspect in the case. Meanwhile, police last night refused to deny reports that US security services had been tipped off about a planned attack on Glasgow Airport.
New Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, will make a statement on the situation in the Commons today.
