Flyglobespan plane diverted to Glasgow Airport

Over one hundred passengers on a Flyglobespan flight from Lanzarote had to be diverted to Glasgow Airport earlier this week, after two aborted landings at Edinburgh Airport.
The flight had been delayed half an hour before take off and the Boeing 737-700 came in to land at Edinburgh Airport at 02:35 on Monday. It was due to land on a temporary runway, as the main one is closed at night until November for major resurfacing works.
However, the temporary runway does not have an instrument landing system which gives precision radio and lighting guidance to approaching aircraft and, after two failed attempts to land, the plane was diverted to Glasgow. Buses were laid on at Glasgow to take passengers to Edinburgh.
A spokesman for Edinburgh Airport said: ‘This has not been a big problem. We don't have many passenger flights coming in at night at Edinburgh.’ A Flyglobespan spokeswoman added: ‘We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience. Poor visibility and lack of a landing guidance system on the secondary runway at Edinburgh Airport prompted the pilot's actions. Safety is always our primary concern.’
