Student in court after cutting plane seat belts
01.03.09
A student who smuggled nail scissors on to a jet then used them to cut through and steal two seat belts has appeared in court, the Daily Record reports. Hakim Arari, 21, who arrived at Glasgow Airport on an easyJet flight from Paris, stunned police when he told them he had been trying to make himself a belt to hold up his trousers.
When the plane touched down in Scotland that cabin crew realised Mr Arari had used nail scissors to cut through two seat belts and taken the straps and buckles. Police were called and he was arrested. He spent the night in the cells before appearing at Paisley Sheriff Court last Tuesday.
Defence lawyer Kitty McGhee admitted her client's behaviour had been ‘very bizarre’ and confirmed he had intended to use both the strap and buckle to make his own belt. Sheriff Tom Ward ordered him to pay easyJet £65.30 to replace the belts and fined him £200. easyJet have banned him from their flights, so he will need to find a different way to return home to Paris. And a belt.
