Airports expect busy weekend
27.08.11
UK airports are expecting a busy long-weekend getaway. Travel organisation ABTA said around 1.8 million people would be heading abroad over the weekend - roughly the same number as last year.
Heathrow has deployed extra staff at its terminals to handle the influx of passengers during the busy August bank holiday flurry. Additional customer service employees are at check in and baggage reclaims to ensure a smoother journey for the 852,100 passengers set to pass through its doors, up 13,100 on last year. Monday will be its busiest day.
Around 250,000 are flying from Gatwick, 125,000 from Stansted, 150,000 from Manchester, 65,000 from Birmingham, 24,000 from Leeds Bradford and 70,000 from Luton. Some 115,000 people will be leaving from the main Scottish airports of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Spain and its islands are the holidaymakers’ number one destination, with Portugal, the Greek islands, Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt also popular. City breaks are also popular with travellers looking for a short trip away from the unsettled UK weather.
