Gatwick wants parking for Superjumbos
27.01.12
The introduction of the world's largest passenger aircraft to Gatwick Airport, the Airbus A380 Superjumbo, has moved a step closer after a planning application was lodged with Crawley Borough Council, the Crawley News reports. The airport has submitted an application to reconfigure an existing aircraft stand and parking area so they can accommodate the giant plane.
The new stand would be at the North Terminal and ‘pavement strengthening’ where the aircraft would park would also be carried out. Smaller aircraft would still be able to park at and make use of the new stand.
The airport already has permission from the council, granted in 2010, to accommodate the huge double decker planes. The introduction of the aircraft has been highlighted as a way Gatwick can increase passenger intake without increasing flights or the need for a second runway.
Airport public affairs manager Henry Parker said: ‘The planes are known to be better performing in terms of noise and carbon dioxide impacts. They are bigger aircraft and can fit more people in them, and that is better environmentally.’
Crawley Borough Council is expected to make a decision on the application by February 2.To book gatwick airport hotels or gatwick airport parking at the lowest price, click on these links to two great gatwick parking and gatwick hotels price comparison pages.
